Is Chiang Mai still worth it if you cannot leave during burning season?

My work is on a Thai school calendar so February to April is exactly when I cannot go anywhere. Everyone tells me to just leave for those months, which is not available to me. For people who stayed through it — what does life actually look like? Does a serious purifier setup make an apartment liveable, or are you just indoors and miserable for eight weeks? Honest answers welcome, including "do not move here".
